60 Seconds with Caitlin McCracken
Tell us about your role and your organisation.
I am the designer and owner of my knitwear brand, Caitlin McCracken Knitwear.

Give us a brief overview of your career journey so far.
I studied Textiles at Ulster University, where I discovered my passion for knitwear. After graduating, I wasn’t sure what path to take, but an opportunity arose through The Designerie in Bushmills, where I joined a graduate scheme in the Maker’s House. I started selling handmade crafts, but over the course of a year, I changed my direction and started my knitwear brand. Following the scheme, I rebranded and launched my own website. Most recently, my work was recognised when I received the Best Green Business award at the WIB Awards 2025.

What is one skill that helps you most in your role and why?
Resilience is the skill that has helped me most in my role. Starting my brand has required a huge amount of work, and I’ve learned that long-term goals take both time and patience. There are always unforeseen challenges to overcome, and working as a solo founder can sometimes feel lonely. I often question my ability and whether all the hard work will pay off, but resilience helps me to pick myself up, brush it off, and keep going.

What advice do you have for women in your industry?
My advice to other knitwear and fashion designers is to stay true to your creative vision and build your own world. By sharing that world with others, you’ll attract customers who truly connect with and believe in you. Building a brand takes time and effort, but the most important thing is to put yourself out there, say yes to opportunities, even if you don’t feel fully experienced. Surround yourself with people who support you, and be open to advice and constructive criticism from those you trust, as these will help strengthen your brand. One mantra I hold onto is ‘progress over perfection’ keep moving forward, continue learning, and always work on refining your craft.

Are there any exciting plans in the year ahead for your organisation?
As we move into the winter months, the peak season for my brand, I’m looking forward to gaining more visibility after a quiet summer. It feels like the perfect time to showcase my knitwear, and I’m excited for what’s ahead. Caitlin McCraken Knitwear have launched a limited edition beanie collection is a token of thoughtfulness, designed for the gift giver who finds joy in showing care to their loved ones. With only 10 exclusive handpicked colour-ways, each beanie holds a different story, making every gift as special as the person receiving it. To complete the cosy set, pair it with our matching fingerless gloves and create a thoughtful bundle that wraps warmth and love into every gesture. You can shop on our website here: Limited Edition Beanie

Who has been your biggest career inspiration and why?
My nanny and granda, who together were the ultimate power couple in business, have always been my greatest inspiration. They owned a number of shops and worked side by side, showing me what hard work and dedication look like. Although my granda is no longer with us, I know he would be proud and encouraging of my entrepreneurial spirit.

If you had to pick your soundtrack song to get you through the working day, what would it be?
“End of Beginning” by Djo is about reflecting on the different chapters of life and recognising that change is essential for growth. It’s a reminder to accept transitions, learn from past experiences, and actively create the future you want.
